Sr. Mary Stella - Contemplative Prayer

This coming Tuesday evening 17 February, Soulfood continues. At the moment we are following a series of talks on prayer. This week we are very privileged to have one of the sisters from the Bernardine Cistercians speak to us and answer questions on 'contemplative prayer' and why it is so essential for us. In a change to the usual routine, we are meeting at 6.15pm at the Pastoral Centre, Balmoral Rd, Lancaster LA1 3BT - we'll be leaving at 6.30pm and driving to Hyning Hall Monastery where we will have the talk and join the community for Compline/Night Prayer. This is a rare opportunity to visit a monastery and get an insight into their life and prayer. Come along. We'll be back at Lancaster just after 9pm.

Meet at pastoral centre at 6.15pm, to leave at 6.30pm prompt

Made Flesh - The New Testament

Having spent the last few sessions studying the Old Testament it was time to see where it had all been heading and we were led through the Wisdom books to discover who the prophets had been speaking of.
Song of Songs speaks of a lover and the Psalms of a suffering servant, a good shepherd and a rock. Ring any bells? All of the Old Testament has been leading and guiding us to this point. The point where Jesus our Saviour, Lord and Messiah, Emanuel 'God with us' is born as a humble baby in a dirty stable.

Woe to You! -
The Prophetic Challenge

Well we didn't get to meet the dog but Fr Michael did take us on an exciting journey (with his new exciting computer programme!) on which we met the Old Testament prophets. What is a prophet you might ask? Well a common misconception is that they were people who could tell the future but as Fr Michael showed us, they were actually people who listened to God and repeated what they heard. Their message was not always popular as it challenged people to change their ways but the centre of all of their prophecies was the deep longing of God for His people - a longing He has for each of us.

From Jeremiah to Jonah, Hosea to Habakkuk, Zephaniah to Zechariah, Micah to Malachi not forgetting Isaiah, Ezekiel and all the other brave prophets along the way, we were inspired by the devotion to God that challenged them to take risks and make His message heard.

Do we dare take up their mantle today?
